"How long does it take to get funded?" is one of the first questions every aspiring funded trader asks — and the honest answer is as long as it takes to trade well, plus the firm's waiting periods. The good news: the firm-imposed delays are short. The realistic news: rushing the part you control is exactly how people add weeks (or months) by failing and restarting.
I'm the founder of FundedScore, and I've run this timeline across the major firms. Here's a realistic breakdown.
Getting funded — the realistic timeline (firms we track):
- Evaluation: from a few days to a few weeks, depending on you
- Most top firms are one-step — no second phase to extend it
- Funded → first payout: often a minimum-days wait (e.g. ~5–8 days)
- Fastest first payout: day one of funded at Take Profit Trader
The two clocks: yours and the firm's
Getting funded runs on two timelines:
- Your clock — passing the evaluation. This is the variable part, entirely under your control. A disciplined trader can clear a one-step eval's ~6% target in a few good trading days; someone who oversizes and fails restarts the clock.
- The firm's clock — waiting periods. These are fixed: minimum trading days on the eval (sometimes), then minimum days on the funded account before your first payout.
Most of the uncertainty is on your clock, and most of the delay people complain about is self-inflicted — failing fast and rebuying. So "how long does it take to get funded" is really "how disciplined are you."
Stage 1 — Passing the evaluation
Because most top futures firms run one-step evaluations with no time limit, the eval is as fast or slow as your trading. A realistic range:
- A few days if you're consistent and trade a clear edge in modest size.
- A few weeks if you grind patiently with micro contracts — which is completely fine, and often smarter.
The fastest path is not rushing. Oversizing to pass in one day is the single biggest cause of failure, which restarts everything — see how to pass a futures prop firm evaluation. A "no minimum trading days" firm lets you pass the moment you hit the target, but speed there only helps if you don't blow up reaching it (more in no minimum trading days prop firms).
Stage 2 — Activation
Pass, and you move to a funded account — sometimes with an activation or monthly fee. This step is quick (often same-day), but it's a real stage; see what happens after you pass.
Stage 3 — Funded to first payout
This is the firm's clock. Most firms require a minimum number of trading days on the funded account (commonly ~5–8) and often a consistency rule before you can withdraw. So even a perfect funded trader usually waits a week-ish for that first payout.
The exception: Take Profit Trader lets you withdraw from your first funded profit — effectively day one. If shortest time-to-cash is your priority, that's the fastest route, as I cover in fastest-funding futures prop firms.
How long does it take to get funded: a realistic estimate
Putting it together for a disciplined trader:
- Best case: pass in ~3–5 days, activate same day, first payout ~5–8 days later → funded-and-paid in ~2 weeks. (Or near-immediate cash at a day-one-payout firm.)
- Realistic case: a couple weeks to pass at a patient pace, plus the payout wait → 3–5 weeks total.
- If you rush and fail: add the reset/rebuy cycle each time — this is where months disappear.
How to actually get funded faster
- Don't rush the eval — paradoxically, patience is the fastest route, because failing restarts everything.
- Pick a one-step eval and a forgiving drawdown so a normal pullback doesn't reset your clock.
- Use micros and small fixed risk to grind the target without blowing up.
- If cash speed matters, choose a fast-payout firm like Take Profit Trader.
How long it takes to get funded is mostly up to you: trade with discipline and the firm's waiting periods are short. Rush, and you'll restart the clock again and again. Compare eval styles and payout timelines in our comparison table.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get funded by a prop firm? For a disciplined trader, often around 2 weeks end to end — a few days to pass a one-step eval, same-day activation, then a ~5–8 day minimum before the first payout. Rushing and failing extends it significantly.
How fast can you pass a prop firm evaluation? Since most futures evals are one-step with no time limit, you can pass in a few days if you trade consistently. But oversizing to pass faster is the main cause of failure, which restarts the process.
Which prop firm gets you paid the fastest? Take Profit Trader is the fastest — it lets you withdraw from your first funded profit, effectively day one, while most firms require a minimum-days wait.
Can you get funded in a day? You can pass a one-step eval in a day at a no-minimum-days firm if you hit the target — but rushing usually means oversizing and failing. And even after passing, the first payout is still gated by minimum funded days at most firms.
How long before you can withdraw after getting funded? Most firms require a minimum of about 5–8 funded trading days (plus sometimes a buffer or consistency rule) before the first payout. Take Profit Trader is the exception — withdraw from your first funded profit.
